Hi, Jeff:

I would open a PMR to ask IBM to explain what happened, and why.

Jim,

I didn't explain in great detail, but I did _not_ use option 8. Here's
what I did:

1) A few weeks back I downloaded TR6 along with a few other PTFs via
SNDPTFORD. There were less than 15 PTFs total.

2) I did INSPTF LICPGM(*ALL) INSTYP(*DLYALL). This was also over 2 weeks
ago. So there would have been a small number of PTFs set to apply.

3) My weekend schedules weren't conducive for an IPL until last Friday.
During the day on Friday I did a SNDPTFORD for virtually all the group
PTFs. That's _all_ I did. After the download there was no LODPTF, APYPTF,
INSPTF, or option 8 done from the GO PTF menu. I only did this thinking I
might have the occasion over the weekend to do another IPL. If so, I then
wouldn't have to spend time downloading the groups as I would already have
them.

4) Friday night I did the IPL, which turned into a double IPL, applying
_all_ the PTFs on the system, including those I downloaded that day. I
simply wasn't expecting that.

I'm not having any issues as a result. Just surprised.

Jeff,

I would expect that if you took the option 8 to "Install program temporary
fix package" from the PTF menu, and then selected option 3 for the Prompt
for media. My experience is that the PTFs from the DVDs (or optical
images) and any save file downloaded PTFs will be applied. The help for
this option is;

3=Multiple volume sets and *SERVICE
Specifies to prompt for volumes in multiple volume sets when
loading the PTFs. After PTFs are loaded from the last volume
set, PTFs will be loaded from the service support system
(*SERVICE). This option is also used to install PTFs from a
single volume set and from *SERVICE.

For me this loads the PTFs in save files located in QGPL.

Had in interesting one Friday night.

On 7.1

As of Friday morning, I had TR 6 set to be applied via a Friday night
IPL I
would do from home, as well as a few other PTFs that were previously
downloaded and set to apply.

I decided to download all the other groups I could think of via SNDPTFORD
on Friday and leave them as "Save File Only." Then, if I got a wild hair
over the weekend, I could load and apply those as well with another IPL.

Lo and behold, when I did that IPL Friday night, not only did it do a
double IPL (which I was sorta expecting), it also loaded and applied all
those PTFs (100+) that had been in Save File Only status. Note that I did
no LODPTF, APYPTF, or INSPTF after downloading them.

I did not expect those newly downloaded ones to apply. I hadn't even
read
the cover letters, which I usually do via DSPPTFCVR *NOTAPY.

Is what happened (applying those in Save File Only status) what the rest
of
you would have expected to happen?

Thanks.
