In our world, #2 or combo #2/#3 (using print server with printer session controlling it) works the best. To go direct from the i to the print server is a remote outq rather than a device. We've had lots of problems with that (though we do still have some in use) and generally avoid it. If you're all local on the same LAN, it's not so bad unless people like to print specific pages of a large report. There's allegedly a program that can make that work, but I've never tried it.
Note: We don't specifically have 4230; I'm just speaking in generalizations here.

Subject: Using a 4230 Printer with an IP print server
Subject says it all. I have a 4230 printer that is currently has twinax, serial and parallel ports. The new 720 can't talk twinax so we either ditch the printer or:
1) Get a IP to Twinax converter (not worth the money...)
2) Connect the printer to a PC using a parallel cable and use a printer emulation session to connect to the i. (haven't tried this yet but it looks promising)
3) Connect the parallel port on the printer to a print server and use TCP/IP to print to it.
Option 3 is what I am wondering about. Could I create a printer device description that would basically do what option 2 would do? That is, send a printer stream to the print server that would correctly output the print job?
Looks like the only option with *LAN and *IP is a 3812 model 1. But maybe I need to use *RMT or *VRT ? I guess what I am asking to start with is, has anyone used a print server attached printer with their IBM i? What is the best approach? Can you point me to some examples to get me started?
Thanks.
