I can see the benefits of VIOS and see how it replaces guesting partitions under i5/OS. I currently do not see the need here as we put 100% of the hardware into 1 partition. If we ever do go the SAN method, I will have them purchase a small machine to play VIOS with. (Ya right!) We are just too small at this time for running multiple partitions on one hardware. We have 4 machines for two reasons. Two locations: Power 7 mirrored to power 6. The two power 5's, one in each location, are dedicated to the online transaction processing. I can see where I can put these system into a partition but the owner likes the dedicated hardware. I have the available CPU and can add memory and disk to virtualize the power 5's onto the power 6 and 7 frames. Hopefully next year.
Anyone know what it will take to put VIOS on and move the current partition from dedicated to VIOS?
