All,

Thanks for all the input. Based on the some of the links provided and a bit
of nudging from IBM we were able to configure a LAN console.

We created a document on how to do this as part of our DR plan.
If a anyone would like a copy, just let me know.

Some of the largest power 7's won't work with sdmc according to a chart I
was looking at earlier.

You may look at just running an SDMC console and setting that up. I have
heard that there are some things that the SDMC still will not do that a
physical HMC will do. I know that IBM is trying to get off of the HMC
and
they're pushing either the SDMC or Systems Director. I also know you can
run an SDMC as a virtual server but it must include a "second" ethernet
device for connecting into the HMC side of the Power7 systems in order to
manage them. I'm researching this for our installations to see if it
makes
sense to drop a virtual machine on my Linux virtual cluster rather than
trying to run it in our VMware environment. It'll just be a matter of
piping another vlan into my linux cluster. If you want to make it
simple,
just run a small Linux workstation and install it with two ethernet
devices. It doesn't need much resources to run, but there must be a DHCP
server on that private network to generate the IP's for the Power7
systems.

How do I reconcile what you've said:
No More HEA's on the E4C models.
With what James said:
We have: HMC1, HMC2, S1, S2, T1-T4.
Isn't T1-T4 indicative of HEA? Or is there some sort of other 4 port
ethernet card?

And, as another poster said, I was a little confused also as to whether
he
wanted HMC or Lan Console.
- We can access ASMI, but can't seem to run an HMC device.
- ...but still can't seem to get the Operations Console going...
So my first answer leaned towards Lan Console.

But let me duck back to HMC. I wonder what sort of HMC. Our HMC's are
too old for Power 7 equipment.

If an HMC is used to manage any POWER7 processor based server, the

No More HEA's on the E4C models. They are using a 5767 Dual Port GB NIC
instead. It can NOT be split or Virtualized across partitions. So if you
want real External Ports for each partition, you will need cards for
each
partirtionThe Top Port will be where the system looks for the LAN
CONSOLE.
The card I believe by default will be in Slot C6.

Hello,

Just got a 720 Power ISeries in yesterday and am having a heck of a time
getting it configured for Operations Console. The box I was using last
couple of weeks is a few years old, so it was a bit different and went
ever
so smoothly.

We can access ASMI, but can't seem to run an HMC device. Have a Neoware
appliance that I've used for my other box, but can seem to get it to see
the new box.
We have the HMC IP's.

I think there is a basic step we are missing. Reading manuals and such,
but
still can't seem to get the Operations Console going.

The manual states to use the 'first port' HEA or C1, but no such label
exists on the box.
We have: HMC1, HMC2, S1, S2, T1-T4.

Not sure I even formulated an intellgent question, but if anyone can
point
me in the right direction I'd appreciate it.
