We read externally-described files in program-described mode with some regularity, because we have full control over any changes to the structure of those files. That allows the files to remain level-check-enabled for the benefit of any outside programs accessing them.

Or there's always the option of replacing native RLA with SQL (a subject that usually has me reaching for the industrial-strength Tums I keep in a desk drawer).
