Just checking a little more (the case is intriguing) I found in my V5R3 SQL
Reference Manual, under the SYSCOLUMNS table specs, for the COLUMN_DEFAULT
column, the following:
*Contains the null value if: *
** The column has no default value. For example, if the column has an
IDENTITY attribute or is a row ID, or *
** A DEFAULT value was not explicitly specified. *
