User experience...for those just getting to V7 IBM i Access for Windows.

We upgraded the OS (on new hardware) from V5.4 to V7.1 back in December. We did no updates to Client Access at that time and had no problems.

Sometime in the last couple of weeks, starting receiving reports of popup windows with error messages and sometimes "strange" login screens. Don't know for sure, but I think Check Service Level decided to run and isn't working very well.

On a WinXP box, used share to Root of IBM i, drilled to /QIBM/ProdData/Access/Windows and clicked on cwblaunch.exe.
    * Installed using the "Full" option
    * Had more strange anomalous login boxes but could get the emulator to work
    * Checked service pack level and found we didn't have latest service pack for Access for Windows.
    * Downloaded PTF SI44594?, loaded and applied *immed
    * Ran check service level and applied update
    * SUCCESS! Almost all issues fixed on XP.

The excel add-in was no longer working correctly. Found that it changed from SDK to COM version but on this PC was not updated correctly enough to work. More explanation for installing COM version here.

On Win7, tried the same but did a PC5250 install. This resulted in problems with popups still (although I don't think the strange login screens were showing up anymore). Did a Remove program, reboot, install as Custom (no changes) and had 100% success including the excel add-in being added correctly. I am not sure if this user had the excel add-in previously.

cwblaunch.exe appears to be able to determine x32 and x64 automatically. I did not have to choose during the install.

HTH others. Biggest issue - apply the latest service pack before using!
