Hi Rob

I got the machine off ebay, for a decent price. I think the seller paid
more for shipping than what its worth :)

I'm ok with re-installing it every 70 days. I actually have CL script
that backs my data up.. I've got rebuild time down to 2-3 hours now.
Seems like in 7.1 you can install from an NFS server, which will greatly
speed things up.

I have some 7.1 ISOs now, but they don't work.... I can get the machine
to IPL but it dies after the 1st CD...

I stress again, this machine isn't PROD it isn't in use in any business
its just a toy machine to learn I5... nobody I know has anything that
isn't mission critical to experiment with learning RPG, how the HMC
works etc.

Regards

If you have an existing lpar, and you have no idea what the keys were or
if you still have access to download the keys (or software), then a
suggestion may be to do a full system save of the existing lpar. Then you
can use that to create your new lpar.

Pete, isn't there some way he could do that without getting all the
'extra' stuff like user libraries and whatnot? I think that's how folks
like you generate new systems with the ptf's and whatnot already applied.
I am sure you posted the steps somewhere but I can't quite figure out the
search combo to get it down to something reasonable.

Bda or Sean,
If you just get distribution media of 6.1 or 7.1 and fire it up, and you
don't have the keys, then your system will only work for 70 days. Probably
better off to do the other. Before whomever gave you that machine changes
jobs you might want to have them use their company access to go to IBM's
website and get a copy of all keys they are entitled to. If they can do
that they can also download software.
