Does cost kick up must by going with 300gb drives ?
About $5K to replace 8 140s with 8 282's.
I imagine an LTO4 drive is $3-4k
About that as I recall.
What's the HMC cost factor ?
For a rack mounted HMC about $6K. Then you can add a flat panel and keyboard or use your own.
Would the scenario You and Pete described use VIOS or just OS/400 (IBM i) as the host OS ?
I think I can speak for Pete when I say we like IBM i hosting!! VIOS has some capabilities IBM i doesn't but you wouldn't use any of them and you would go nuts learning VIOS command line. :-)

I think the hardware list is roughly $16K for this using 140GB Drives and 32GB Memory. No tape drive included and no HMC included either.
