More like confusion pure and simple.

CORRECT if you have an actual iSeries machine (that is it actually says "iSeries" on the front panel) you won't be able to run IBM i 7.1 without getting a new serial number. But that's not 'new news' at all. Those machines are 6.1 at the very latest and mostly V5R4 is the end of the line. As there are no IBM upgrades out of these machines available you will have to get a new serial number to run IBM i 7.1 if you have one of these.

If you have a POWER5 or 5+ machine you can already run IBM i 7.1 so you're good. But on the other hand if you want to get up to POWER7 then you would need to either upgrade to POWER6 and THEN to POWER7 (two steps) to keep the same serial number or you buy a new POWER7 and get a new serial number.

Hope that helps a little!!

Huh?
