We created a field definition file -- that is, we create a physical file
with standard definitions such as Numeric5, then referenced them with
fields we used in our applications.

This table has every definition of every field we use, including
comments and headings. Subsequent files are then defined referencing
this file.

I believe I first read about this in an article by Paul Conte, but we're
talking years ago.
