As other have mentioned...Scott's FTPAPI would seem to answer your concerns...

Plus, there much better error handling available via FTPAPI as opposed
to scripting the OS built in FTP client.

Since discovering FTPAPI, I never script the built in FTP client and
in fact often replace existing usage of ftp scripting with FTPAPI.

the USER's other box(es)!

The whole idea is for the customer to be able to PUSH the product FROM
the box on which it is already installed TO his/her other boxes.

Downloading FROM OUR servers is no trick; THEY allow anonymous downloads.
