It appears to me that at some point, many of us will be dealing with requirements to analyze systems, either to document requirements for new development, or wholesale system replacement. Maybe we'll be documenting requirements, and submitting RFP's for vendor solutions.

What would you do in that situation?

There's no doubt that using a cross reference tool saves me from the
drudgery of manually reviewing every line of code and cross reference in
every compiler listing and then desk-running every job stream to apply
overrides and library list changes in order to follow the data.

Here's the point that got me hopeful: 'X-Analysis actually extracts the
specific business rules automatically from any given RPG, COBOL or SYNON
system. X-Analysis also extracts and describes the data model in
relational and physical terms from the program and file source. The
other cross referencing tools Mr Gibbs has mentioned do none of this.'

Well, the other tools do something quite a lot like that. I know - I've
used Pathfinder/400, Total/400 and Abstract/Probe in addition to
X-Analysis. The format of the output may work better for you than it
does for me or vice versa, and perhaps it's the format of the output
that merits further discussion.
