Your tone sucks. If this is the best you can do then "yes" shut your
mouth until you can speak in a civil way. My opinion of X-Analysis just
dropped way down listening you. If you were trying to sell it, you
certainly failed. If this is an example of who I would have to deal with
at Databorough then count me out..

In conjunction with IBM & IBI, Databorough built a product called
X-WebQuery
hat extracts meta data - including relational information from implicit
esigns in RPG COBOL or the SYNOIN model. It build's this entire
meta-data
odel in WebQuery of an entire system or application area. The tool also
uilds a drill down set of queries using the recovered relational model
in
ebQuery

Guess I'll have to watch the webcast on Tuesday February 23 to get any
details but I was wondering how AEM or Active Energy Manager plays in an
i
world.
[5]http://www.common.org/webcasts/
Boss is talking about upgrading our PDU's to play with this team. Is
this
just for monitoring purposes or does it act like an electric water
heater
in the US? Where the electric company can send a message down the power
line to shutdown electric water heaters during times of peak
consumption.

I can understand how individual equipment can be tuned for this. For
example, if the temperature is not that high then why spin fan motors so
high (or even spin all of them)? But how can a PDU help (other than
monitor)? Shut down the hardware? Give it a "brown out"?

Although having PDU's that I can remotely turn off/on sounds cool,
especially for a bank of modems that I often have to power cycle. Just
have to make sure that alternative equipment is not plugged in, or,
perhaps I can power cycle by outlet on the pdu.

Terry,

No mention of silver bullets in my comments by statement or implication
-
that's your own imagination at work there. None of the X-Analysis users
that
I know worldwide would ever describe it as a silver bullet either. I am
certain that the vast majority would vehemently disagree with David
though.

Pete asked a specific question about X-Analysis. David then saw fit to
answer the question with zero experience or real knowledge about
X-Analysis.
In my book that's not helpful, but pointless really. In the process of
acquiring a certain amount of grey in my own beard, I have learnt it's
better to offer advice from a position of actual experience or real
knowledge, and in the absence of either, remain silent.

Would you rather I shut my mouth about David's ill founded opinion just
because he is an incredibly hard working, dedicated individual who
provides
an invaluable service to the community as a whole? If you do then here
is a
useful reference for you:

I've used X-Analysis. I don't see how it's going to reveal all the
business rules. Here are some examples of business rules:

custno chain credithold
if not %found()...

-load libl into array-
for i = 1 to maxLibs
lib(x) lookup testLibraryTable
if %found() propagate = *off
endfor
...
100 lines later
...
if propagate
call copyTransactionToTest
endif

if *in20 = *on
// display field for 'special attention' is set
call thisCustomerNeedsSpecialAttention
endif

I've used X-Analysis in the past and don't see how it can answer Pete's
question. I do have an open mind though - X-Analysis might have a new
AI module I didn't have the opportunity to use.

Please post the X-Analysis report that will show which of these lines of
code taken from a nasty monolithic spaghetti-code RPG program implements
a business rule:

key chain file1 80
key chain file2 80
key setll file3 80
dow
key reade file3 80
write sfl

Stuart:

I was not referring to X-Analysis specifically ... I was referring to
code analysis tools IN GENERAL.

I'm sure X-Analysis can provide useful information about applications
... but it can only be a tool and that the ONLY way to truly understand
code is to analyze it with your eyeballs and brain.

I've tried similar tools in the past and found (at least for me) that
they are most useful once you have a general understanding of the
application.

They monitor and can shut down individual ports.

Intelligent PDUs can enable a truly scalable datacenter (if you're
scaling horizontally), however this is mostly uninteresting for IBM i
customers, since they scale vertically.

For example, let's assume you run facebook.com - you need 1000 web
servers to serve all the access from the US and Europe during a 16h
period, however Asia doesn't use Facebook that much, so you could
power down 500 Web servers during an 8h period.

For modems, it may be a lot cheaper to purchase an IP-enabled
powerstrip, rather than an IBM-branded Intelligent PDU.
