Since the thread also discusses passing the error structure to
an API call and preventing corruption of same, your passing of
zero "bytes provided" prevents the API from providing error
feedback.

Actually, if you provide a USEC that specifies 0 bytes provided, then the
API simply sends any exceptions to its caller as an *ESCAPE message. This
may be what you meant, but that's not the same as saying that it prevents
the API from providing feedback. In other words, it's provided, but perhaps
not in the form you prefer.
