The internal search function is temporarily non-functional. The current search engine is no longer viable and we are researching alternatives.

a nicer

equivalent).
I don't recall the News version but that's the technique I used.
I can't specifically remember if you could do a DSPFD to an outfile
but
somehow I think not; you had to do a print screen I think, hence the
requirement for an RPG program.
DSPFD on S/38 did support outfiles (via the less than intuitive
OUTPUT(*NONE) value) and both the QAFDMBR and QAFDMBRL formats
contained record counts (at least by CPF R8.0) but I think the INFDS
method is likely faster than outfile support--also a lot less code.
Man, I loved that box, it had tons of personality
Yep, my favourite system too. Although OS/400 has the same
underpinnings as CPF I thought it had been messed up by all the menus
and S/36 stuff but I did prefer PDM to the old programmer's menu. Of
course, I'm used to all the differences now--but I ignore the S/36
stuff. Funnily enough, I was looking though old S/38 CL the other day
and found the obj.lib qualified names to look seriously wrong. How we
adjust to changes!

Yes, the hex status codes encoded as a light array. I used to irritate
my boss when he'd ask what the machine was doing: I'd look at the
lights, mentally convert to hex (e.g., 3f10) and say something like
"Oh, storage directory rebuild in progress--probably take another 15
minutes or so". Of course, I could probably have said anything and he
wouldn't be any wiser; Re-calibrating the tracks on the 8" diskettes
in the magazine, tensioning the springs on the Piccolo drive, setting
the volume control for the whine produced by the 3370 during start-up,
all would likely have produced a response of "Ahh, right-oh then, I'll
leave you to it" and a very strange look.

Simon Coulter.
