Lukas,
The only issue that I see is that unless you reload SLIC and
initialize your system you won't have the System Values, Reply list entries,
changes to anything in QSYS, and DST profiles. This is mostly because they
would have been already on the system if you don't reinitialize. So when
you D-mode IPL from the LTO-4 tape that you created up to DST, I assume you
will take the Restore SLIC and initialize the system option.
The DUPTAP running on V6R1 *SHOULD* duplicate the virtual tape of
V5R4M5 to the new LTO-4 Tape without changing anything.

Subject: Full OS migration from a 9407-515 to 8403-E4A without using tape
Heya all,
I'm in front of something i didn't do before and hope that what i'm
planning to do is feasible. I appreciate all feedback.
I currently have a 9407-515 with two LPARs on it, which will be
migrated to a one-core 8403-E4A each.
Now i did these migrations several times before - with tapes, but the
situation here is a bit more difficult - one of the LPARs doesn't have
a tape drive, the other one only has a measly 36GB DAT drive. The
8403-E4A have an LTO4 drive. One LPAR runs V5R4M5, the other one runs
V6R1M0.
Now, my idea is as follows:
Create a virtual tape
Do a Save 21 to virtual tape - both systems are at ~ 35% disk
utilization, so this should work
Transfer the virtual tape using FTP to the new machines, which have
the IBM preload on them
DUPTAP the virtual tape to an LTO4 tape
IPL from the LTO4 tape, and perform the usual "Recovering your system
to a different system" tasks
I, of course, intend to test this as soon as the hardware is here
(it's an internal system, not a customer's). But does anyone see any
obvious problems with my approach?
