We have just installed a 520 8203 model E4A that replaces our 520 9405.
Our IBM business partner (who shall again remain nameless) was to
configure it so we would lose no Âcapabilities but we can no longer use
SDLC without adding an expansion unit and cards.

The switch to PCI-E in the CEC killed off a lot of outdated technology
for small system deployments without expansion units. I always welcome
such changes, because it will finally make it necessary for customers
to get rid of their old crap.

An option for you would be to switch over to PPP connections. The
internal modems in the Modell 270 and up all support PPP. The internal
modem in the E4A also supports PPP, which makes it easy.

PPP is also easy to configure and deploy. WRKTCPPTP should get you started.

In case a customer has a system that's even older than a 270, a plain
router with an analog modem card in it should suffice, and only set
you back around 100$.
