Even if you were to get a new machine, wouldn't the ease of moving
from old-->new when both are at v5r4 mean it would make sense to
upgrade the 270 to v5r4?

But as Lucas points out, IBM doesn't support v5r1-->v5r4, you're going
to need either v5r2 or v5r3 in the middle. Getting your hands on them
will be the issue, as you can't get them from IBM anymore.

Don't. You can go V5R1->V5R3->V5R4, but it doesn't make any sense.
