There are many LTO-3 drives on the used market. Their cartridges are much cheaper. I do not think a 520 express can run a LTO-4 at full speed so you will end up with lots of tape start/stop which will slow your backup way down. But the LTO-4 is a screamer.

Subject: 5746 LTO4 Ultrium drive

Any comments on this tape drive.
Customer is upgrading from an old model 800 w/QIC drive to a 520 Express (tower).
I know the Ultrium cartridges more expensive, but they are getting
close to the limit of a single cartridge for an unattended backup.
I've used larger Ultrium drives w/out too much issue.
