I think that open sourcing i5/OS would be a disaster:

1) Even relatively self contained open source i5 projects have gained almost no traction. Only a few dedicated individuals (kudos to them!) participated.

2) OS development, which is so broad in scope and so integrated, would require a large team of collaborators spending a LOT of time, for ostensibly no compensation.


So while it sounds like a good idea, I don't think it will fly. Plus, what's in it for IBM??

Where is IBM labs located? I suspect it no longer exists. Only by
being open sourced will IBM i ( call it "open i" ) get the
improvements it needs like remote desktop, managed code and a native
web server. My boycott of anything IBM continues until mgmt does right
by its legacy customers.
