I think they knock off a $100. Covers the conference hotel's expectation
that they'll get x number of rooms for the use of the conference rooms.

You're right though, most times you can save money off site. Some venues
try to get you with parking charges and stuff to get you to stay on site.
Then they shoot themselves in the foot by charging their guests the same
thing.

Going to training this month. Closest hotel was a Marriot. Even then it
would have been a vigorous walk (.6 mile) to the training across some
traffic. $189.95 a night for the privilege of having access to paying $12
a person for breakfast. Instead I opted for the Super 8 two miles away
for $71.99 for two beds. (Coworker swears he doesn't snore.) Boss
appreciated the gesture.
