This is one of the biggest improvements of 7 over 6 is remote connectivity
due to WebSm going away. Websm was very slow.
Anyway, since you are on V6, did you check under Network where your default
gateway is pointing? Is it possible when you are in the office you are on
the same subnet so it's not a problem to go out of ETH1. Does ETH1 know how
to find your gateway?

I seem to be in the same boat as you. I recently upgraded the HMC to
v6r1.3 myself and cannot connect to the HMC over VPN. Its too slow and
just times out. At least, that is what I think. I can connect to the
console work station, but again, it is soooooooo slow. Worse than dial
up.
I'd like to hear if you find a solution. And upgrading to version 7
right now is not an option.
