While reading through all the replies here, i think many of you missed
the point.
This is about "legacy AS/400 applications". And there are lots of
legacy applications on the i - poorly maintained applications written
in years past, without commitment control or journalling, proper
database design, without adhering to current best practices regarding
programming (service programs, change control, versioning, unit
testing etc.) and still using antique user interfaces like 5250.
These applications are bad - they give the i a bad name, for no real reason.
If you are still running one of these legacy applications, why do you do it?
* Upgrading to costly?
* No business reason to upgrade?
* IBMs alternate offerings on the i not suitable?
I don't like WebSphere - it is hilariously slow on the smaller i
machines, making it completely unsuitable for my customers.
I also think screen scraping (which HPs offering seems to be about) is
a horrible idea - you'll need to redesign a 5250 user interface to
take full advantage of a modern browser based interface.
Please - read the HP document again, but this time think about what is
RIGHT in there - what you can do to fix what they bemoan about the i.
That's the best way to ensure that noone will try to leave the
platform you're proficient in - by ensuring that it is what the users
WANT.
