Would V5R3 be able to run on the new model?
http://www-304.ibm.com/systems/support/i/planning/upgrade/osmapping.html

Would it be beneficial to set up LPARs?
Would justify an HMC. And those, my friend, kick butt for remote support.
But that is an added expense you may not want. If you go to power 6
hardware and V6R1 then the guested partitions significantly reduce
hardware costs on lparing for disk.
Other use for lpar:
- Test vs production.
- Test new versions of OS, ptf's, vendor software, etc
- DMZ
- Query from hell of replica data won't bring down production
But if they don't have it now...

I'm wondering what kind of "backward" compatibility issues there may be
between the newly selected model and the 170, and their respective O/S
levels?
V5R3 support dies in just a couple of months. Some vendors are starting
to get sensible and no longer support versions that are not supported by
IBM. (Sorry James - take a blood pressure pill.) Chief among these are
many of the HA vendors. So, your plans to use it as a DR machine may not
be feasible.
