If you think training's expensive, you ought to try ignorance.

Unfortunately, unlike hardware, software, and training; ignorance does
not show up on the balance sheet as a line item. If it did, management
might understand things better. But ignorance is a "hidden" cost to the
business.
Just like some of what we are doing now. We have outsourced all our high
volume, regularly scheduled printing. And that is good (or at least less
expensive). However, since we don't have any more centralized high speed
printers or print operators, all "ad hoc" printing must be done by the
individual department (or they must wait for their report the next
morning from the outsourcer). That means that they not only need to have
someone logon to the report system and request the print, they must have
a fast enough printer to print it (if large). The paper, toner, and
personnel time to print it cost the individual department, not IT. I
expect that we are going to see a number of "we need a new printer" type
requests from a number of department as they exceed the duty cycle of
their laser printers. But, that comes out of __their__ budget, not IT's
budget. So, for us, such printing is "good". But for the company
overall? Well, ...?
