What I am thinking of is this scenario. Our programmers normally log
onto the Dev system. That is where all their "personal tools" are. There
is a production problem. The programmer then logs onto the Pdn system
(this may be where my "problem" begins). But they want their "personal
tools", which may be things like some CL programs and "stuff" like maybe
notes. I guess for "notes" they could log on to both systems
simultaneously. But if they have a program which is a "forensic" program
that they want to run against a production database, would they log on
to Dev and run their program against the production database via
DDM/DRDA/whatever-it-is called? Is there any need/way for the programmer
to look at a SPOOL file on production?

Perhaps this is not the appropriate way to debug a production problem on
the i? I.e. I'm being unduly influenced by my z background and trying to
"do it the z way" on an i. Wouldn't surprise me if that is the case.

John, do you have an example of a "forensic" program they'd want to run or
at least an example of what one might do?

In any event, the i does support 3 separate "network file systems" both as a
client and a server.
1) SMB - Windows compatible
2) NFS - UNIX/AIX/Linux Network File System
3) QFileSvr.400 - System i specific

Off the top of my head, I don't know if you can run a command/program
located on a remote box locally. I suspect the answer is determined by what
environment and what files system you are using. For example, you probably
can use NFS to locally execute a PASE program stored on another machine.

Running a native i program? Don't know, but I suspect not. If it does
work, I'd expect have to be done from qshell as qshell supports the IFS
naming needed.

My guess would be that the standard in the System i world is to simply have
the tool on each box.

Charles
