Scott,

The bulk of the community does consider them new names for the same thing.
And, there is the rub... If ~we~ continue to propagate that perception, in
an industry where change is rapid and desired, then ~we~ continue to fade
into the past.

Of course, it starts with IBM working to ensure that the perception of Power
and IBM i is that it ~is~ modern and up to date (the new name should be part
of that..). Then, it continues with the community. But, while the noisy
users tell everyone it is the same thing as the OLD thing, thus it shall
remain so.

Your earlier email points out many reasons why people are concerned about,
or running away from IBM i - and you have it right. My concern is that we
(the community) have it in our grasp to use what IBM has given us (the Power
name, superior hardware, the best business OS, etc) and spread the word. But
we, as a community, cannot agree for reasons (stubbornness, negativity,
doom+gloom+FUD, lack of knowledge) that are hard to fathom for a group that
agrees 99.99% on the value of the platform.

It does not seem to be difficult. Our heritage is AS/400, iSeries, System i
(sure, all the same thing, if you like). Our future is IBM i on Power
Systems - the best OS on the best hardware you can buy.

Trevor,

If people do think that IBM simply changed the name, then we have little
hope for the platform.

I was discussing what the current perception is, and that *is* what
people think. When you talk to people at conferences, user groups,
forums, etc, do you find that they think IBM changed the technology and
then changed the name to match? Or do you find that they consider
"System i the new name for iSeries. and iSeries the new name for AS/400"?

I think it would be wonderful if everyone thought that IBM i was
technologically miles ahead of i5/OS, which in turn was miles ahead of
OS/400. But that's not a reality today. The bulk of the community
considers them new names for the same thing.
