We were in the same position. After discussing it with the HMC guy at
SupportLine we decided to just scratch the HMC and go straight to the
target release. We didn't have any customization at all on the HMC, so
this was a viable option for us.

I agree that V7 of HMC is the bee's knees. However, you may have to
crawl to get there if your FSP code and your HMC code are both way back.
Check out the supported code combinations at:
https://www14.software.ibm.com/webapp/set2/sas/f/power5cm/supportedcode.

We were so out of date it was a process of putting on a release of HMC,
upgrading FSP, putting on another release of HMC, putting on another
release of FSP Lather, Rinse, Repeat.

Try Hardware Management Console V7 Handbook,SG24-7491, at:
http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/abstracts/sg247491.html
And the HMC Support Web Site, at:
http://www14.software.ibm.com/webapp/set2/sas/f/hmc/home.html
There is also the Operations Guide for the Hardware Management Console
and Managed Systems, SA76-0085, but I don't have the link for this one.
If you are not currently on V7 of the HMC I highly recommend upgrading,
it's worth it.

Subject: HMC and LPARs
Can anyone suggest any education, possibly online or electronic
manuals,
to get up to speed with these two topics? I am familiar with the
iSeries
itself, just have never used LPAR's or HMC.
