Third, the Windows aspect is important because that's what all of those newly minted "managers" coming out of college were raised on; just as my generation was raised on IBM systems.
There's more to it than that. Especially smaller companies buy
applications - not a specific platform.
The days where every small company started programming their own ERP
system are long gone - off the shelf software is the norm, with even
many big companies migrating (or rather, trying to migrate) to
extensive ERP frameworks like SAP.
How many vendors are there that sell a fully modern ERP application
that runs on the i?
Let's take a small business, maybe 25 people. So far they've used
Windows XP based computers, assembled by the CEOs son from spare
parts. Their "ERP" application is some el-cheapo product that cost
200US$ and uses a shared MDB file on a network drive. They also have a
few other LOB applications that run on DOS or Windows, though they're
minor. Their job is just to resell chemicals or whatever. They have
very few specific for their ERP software. Of course, they want to get
rid of their data entry processes, and modernize as much as possible.
Now they want to modernize their complete infrastructure. With a
modern ERP. What would you recommend them to do? Which software would
you recommend them to buy? Which hardware?
