On that note, you may want to look at Penrose (
http://docs.safehaus.org/display/PENROSE/Home ). I haven't tried it, but it
looks like an interesting piece of software.

True, but you'll have to implement an LDAP server, and one that can use
the custom database on the back-end, not just any-old LDAP server.
OpenLDAP appears to be a possibility, one we're looking at now for a
project, but we've not gotten far enough into it to say it works.

Nope, not possible.

There are a few third party products that would allow you to build
something like this, e.G.:

This could bring over the contact list into public folders or
something like that.

However, Outlook can use an LDAP Server to search for contacts.
