And this is a problem, why? Granted, it's easier to just write to a
DB,
but the API's to write to it are pretty standard, aren't they?

It's not just writing to it, it's also updating and deleting from it as
the source data changes. No it's not that hard, but it is a synchronize
process between two "databases" that I'd rather avoid.

OpenLDAP seems to allow you to plug your own select statements on the
back end so that should work rather well. The only apparent problem with
it is update/delete via LDAP is harder, but since this is a read-only
instance for address lookup we don't care about update/delete.
