I've messed up more than once with replies to digests, but I do
_try_ to trim them and set the subject accordingly.
I also _try_ to bottom-post after trimming irrelevant text.
Seems to me that the major difference shows up in the archives. An
archive search for [rexx sq1] for example could show a few very
nicely targeted posts, or it could show page after page after page
of posts that had no useful content because of multiple replies
after thread-drift where 'rexx' and 'sq1' were mentioned way back
down the thread.
BTW, I deliberately typed 'sq1' to help reduce hits where the last
character should be an 'L'.
We are the ones who put the value in to (or drain the value out of)
the archives.
