We don't use journaling here, but I've now set the option in the ODBC DSN to
COMMIT IMMEDIATE (*NONE). The ODBC Connection Type is 'Use ODBC Access
Mode', which I assume as it's not one of the read-only options it's OK.

Alas, I still can't make it work. I use MS Query to get the file into Excel,
change the value of one of the cells and hit Refresh. The value simply gets
over-written to what it was originally.
