For PCs I don't usually pull the power cord-- I think it's better to
have the switch firmly OFF, and the ground wire connected so I can
touch the machine frame and discharge any sparks before I zap the
memory or cpu!

We have full service with IBM for our iSeries machines. When we had
memory added, the CE had us power down the system, and he started
opening and unplugging to get to the memory slots. Power cords still
firmly attached. We also discovered some interlocks on one of our
units-- a simple switch that prevents power up until the cover is
replaced. We added a magic-marker note on the panel to warn us in
the future!

The ground issue is the one that comes into play. Okay, I'm going to go
install the memory. You'll shortly hear how things went <grin>.
