<snip>You're worried about resources and the "half-life of information"
but you consider a complex custom protocol like Lukas's better than
something you can pick up a book about at Barnes & Noble?
.....No offense to Lukas, I'm sure his solution works fine, but you're
never
going to find someone that knows it already, so I find it hard to call
it "better" in the context of complexity, and resources. -Walden</snip>

Well, last five times I looked, there wasn't anything at Barnes & Noble
about either RPG or the "i", or even i5/OS either! :) The best business
computing system on the planet!

But that said, they also don't have to worry about licensing, upgrades,
retrofitting, tweaking, and all that, to accommodate a third party
outfit. Which is not to knock third party outfits, I understand there
are some 3rd party possibilities out there for thin client rendering,
and that's a business decision.

Biggest plus is to skip the temptation to load too much business logic
to a fat client. Even all the "fixed" stuff changes too much.

<snip> Java is also free, and it runs on everything. </snip>

..And it doesn't depend on the guys who do things like sabotage
competing software when the can get away with it.

("...Trust me, I'm from Microsoft and I'm here to help you...")

Java may be a resource hog, but so is all the Windows stuff you have to
deal with, without the licensing and DRM hassles and the cost and the
rest of that.
