If I understand the scenario correctly, Yes. The case as I
understand is fewer fields in the subselect, rather than more fields.
In that case it is easy to just assign literals for the values. Having
to explicitly specify the field list occurs in the inverse scenario.
create table p1 ( a char, r char, c char, x char, y char)
create table p2 ( a char, r char, c char, x char, y char)
create table p3 ( a char, r char, c char)
insert into p1 select * from p2 where ...
insert into p1 select Z.*, ' ', ' ' from p3 Z where ...
