I believe it was an IBM support rep who told me that I need to upgrade the firmware and I didn't press him on it. This was in regards to another IBM issue wherein our 520 generates a service request (calls home) every time our HMC moves the tape IOA and IOP resources to another partition.

I already upgraded the firmware and it was as simple as FTPing a file from my PC to the IFS and then calling a program from 5250 command line. But next time I may ask IBM to do it.

Incidentally, at one time our 3581 was under a depot maintenance agreement which meant if it broke and IBM couldn't direct me to fix it over the phone, they would send me a replacement. So the tape drive stops booting one day and I can't fix it from IBM's phone support so they asked me to send it in. I asked "What about the tape inside, are you going to return it to me"? After a long pause, IBM said "Oh, if there's a tape inside a CE will have to come out and get the tape out". So the CE comes out and fixes the whole thing. The same day I called our business partner to get the machine under 24/7 IBM maintenance.

Subject: RE: 3581 tape unit firmware

Our CE did it for us also, we never used a PC nor did he. They have to do
other maintenance on the box (we just had a broken tape get stuck in ours
last week) so why not firmware?

Good morning folks,
Have any of you updated firmware on a 3581 tape drive or autoloader? I
need to do this and need some direction because I don't quite understand

the different methods outlined in the Service Guide. Can it be done
from
our system i 520?
