Date field in Display file

I have been using date fields in display files for quite a while (output use
only) to provide better formatting (USA format). Last night I was playing
around with using date fields for input and noticed that if you define an
input field as say *USA format and the user enters in an invalid date (say
02/29/2007), the program will error at the writing of the display file, even
before it traps it in the code.



Just for my own information and educational purposes, is there a way to use
date data types in an input capable format that does not have this error
occur? Some special form of trapping, etc.?
