What you probably need is to sniff the wireless packets.

And if my hunch is correct, that still may not show anything if it is just
IP packets and does not show negotiation attempts on network scans. I think
what you may need to sniff is the actual 802.x comm layer, not the IP
packets.

Then again, I could be all wrong. Wouldn't be the first time...
