When evaluating the choices also keep in mind the consumer of the
"service." It's going to be much easier from the client to consume a
service from a web-server (Apache) than it will be to code socket-level
communications to a custom socket-listener program...
I was anticipating the client side (ie, ASP page scripts) would be the same
either way but that I'd just listen and respond to them directly rather than
having Apache play the middle man. However, just using Apache seems like an
easy way to go and quick to get up and running. In the past, this client
has not wanted to have the HTTP server enabled on their machine (and their
website is hosted offsite) but I can propose that this justifies it and we
can restrict things at the firewall.
