For the archives (and Vern) unbeknownst to me, our sysadmin and printer service tech had been playing around with the printer drivers on the PC to which the printer was attached. Deleted the old driver and installed a new one. This caused the iSeries Access to unselect the printer in the File...Printer Setup... option. Selecting the new printer driver and powering the printer down/up fixed the problem.

It did take a call to IBM hardware support who, instead of saying "It';s not an i5 problem." walked me through the everything. Especially Marie who sent me a whole list of things to check.

Sometimes being the early bird has its drawbacks.

Hi Jerry

Something changed - DOH!

There could be timeout settings that are different now on the printer. Those are worth checking - IBM has a KB article on this issue in the area of ASCII printer information.

Also, there is always a writer job or jobs - do a DSPJOB writer-name and you will see a list - pick one and see what it says in the job log - repeat until there ain't no more.

If this doesn't help, could be IBM support time.

Yesterday we had a problem with a printer. After I left service came
and worked on the printer, and I had a note this morning to test it.

Well, I have tried printing to it (HP 8150 LaserJet running under
iSeries Access printer emulation) and every time I send a document or
report to the printer the document goes into a HLD status. WRKWTR shows
the writer is started. WRKCFGSTS shows that the printer is varied on.

Displaying messages for the printer shows:

Message . . . . : Writer P3 stopped printing file REPORT. Cancel on
device

P3.

Cause . . . . . : Writer P3 was printing file REPORT number 36
job
222689/AMIKEV/MSITRAN created on system SERVO on 05/25/07 07:05:45
when the
CANCEL key was pressed on device P3. File REPORT was held on output
queue P3
in QUSRSYS. The next file was
processed.

The CANCEL was not pressed, and I have checked the printer to see if it
is turned on, etc.

Externally everything seems fine with the printer. If documents just
didn't print and issued an error, I could understand and deal with that
(recall hardware service), but when the document goes into a HLD status
every time I release it, I get confused (I'm software, be gentle).
