The original poster might look at using the 
VALUES function (statement?) in embedded SQL in 
RPG. It lets him use any scalar function to put a 
value into a host variable. This is a very handy 
way to use the nifty SQL functions in RPG.

As Birgitta says, there are several 
encrypt/decrypt functions in SQL at least since 
V5R3. I don't know if they require one of the crypto licensed products.
