Having installed Mailtool across many sites for a global client, I can vouch for its ease of use and efficiency! Bypassing the problems of SMTP was the key in this case.

cheers,

An other option is my solution, MAILTOOL, which can be
found at www.bvstools.com/mailtool.html.

It isn't free (but it is cheap), but it's also fully
supported, had years of testing with thousands of users,
and has an option to totally bypass the IBM SMTP server
which is normally the root of most iSeries email issues.

One option is SNDDST which is included with i5/OS. Here
are some
instructions about how to set up SNDDST:
http://tinyurl.com/2yp2ff

Alternately, you might try MMAIL from Easy400.net:
http://www.easy400.net

Or SNDM from Uzaemon:
http://homepage1.nifty.com/uzaemon/

Both of these are free and have more modern features than
SNDDST.
There's also the SNDEMAIL tool from Dave Leland that Rob
mentioned,
though I personally have a lot of gripes with SNDEMAIL
and can't
recommend it.

If you want to learn to write your own e-mail tools, you
might be
interested in some articles I wrote on the subject:

http://www.systeminetwork.com/article.cfm?id=52911
http://www.systeminetwork.com/article.cfm?id=53023

These articles require a membership to
SystemiNetwork.com, but a free
("Associate") membership will work.

I'm only scratching the surface of what's out there.
There are lots and
lots of other tools out there for e-mail, some of them
are free, some
are cheap and come with support. Others are very
powerful and deluxe
(and cost more.)
