I don't think there's much benefit in turning i5/OS into a PHP/MySQL box -
I think it's more along the lines of PASE and Linux support - the i5 can
support multiple applications.
We all know that a System i5 is easier to admin than a "enterprise" Windows
machine (I am unsure about Linux, but would guess the same?) which can have
a TCO dollar amount applied to it (note that I didn't say Personal Computer
Windows). It would be interesting to see how much PHP traffic a 515 could
support for a website sporting static AND a healthy amount dynamic pages.
Another thing I have wondered is what the total cost of entry (talking
knowledge) is to get on the i5 for somebody that hasn't been exposed to it.
Couple of points on this: #1 How streamlined is it to get PHP/MySQL up and
running on i5 vs. Windows (guessing Windows will be easier simply because of
existing knowledge). #2 How streamlined is maintaining that install (i.e.
upgrades of PHP/MySQL, installing new/updated home grown web apps, not
having to install virus patches, capacity on demand, etc).
Time will tell...
