Another exactly. Here it is an order of magnitude difference for FTE
admin requirements between i5/OS and DB2 for i5/OS compared to anything
else. 10x - that's a nice savings. And that's not because I'm good -
much as I'd like to let people think that. Most of my work is done
nicely for me.
A few years ago I started studying for certification in a certain non-i5
DB. The idea of expanding myself and being able to rub shoulders with 6
figure DBA's was intriguing.
You might just call me lazy but after 6 weeks I decided that despite the
allure of this magnificent DB it was actually a huge step backwards.
More effort, more menial tasks, etc. Not worth it by a long shot.
I can't always argue the programming efforts and functionality but on
the admin side DB2 for i5/OS has no peer.

Integrated DB2 is the BEST part of this box.
Think how many System i DBAs you know. Now think how many Oracle, SQL
Server, mySQL DBAs you know. Or search for these jobs on Monster and
like.
Do you see a discrepancy there? That's because IBM takes care of you!
Yes, you can take care of table extents, creating clustered indexes,
spreading the data across drives etc. but why would you want to?
Do you not have anything better to do with your time?
Anyway, that would be a step backwards.

another hopeful side of this is that it is a waste of resources for
IBM to maintain two DB2 products - one for AIX, the other for i5/OS.
If the MySQL people are moving to integrate their database with DB2
then maybe they will push for IBM to unembed the database part of
i5/OS ( so it could be deleted ). If we got rid of i5 hardware and
the integrated database, i5/OS would be a much more viable product.
