externally described files in RPG, DSPDBR, save/restore - there is
nothing special about DB2 on system i that enables these features.

Are you saying that these could be done with any database, or with no
database at all? Granted save/restore is a different animal, but
externally described files, DSPDBR, etc do require a database. Lest we
forget our S/36 and S/34 heritage.

any database. the RPG compiler could query any SQL database to get the
column layout of the externally described table. Getting any database
to work with journaling and commitment control in i5/OS might be a
problem. What I am learning about SQL Server is that it would not
support the record level locking and I/O used in an RPG program.

it is IBM making the moves, I am just guessing what it is all about.

two quarters. maybe their authority has already been taken away -
wouldn't that be great!
