I've generally used cvtch()/cvthc() when I've run into hex needs, so it was mostly a curiosity item.
Here's one reason not to use sprintf in RPG or anywhere: There's no way to tell sprintf() how long your buffer is, so you just have to make sure it's big enough. Also (this is no big deal), sprintf() adds a null-terminator, so you have to allow a byte for it, and (usually) remove it somehow.
Heh, plenty of things I don't appreciate about sprintf(); might as well add these to the list. Not that I won't use it when it's needed!
