A search at IBM iSeries support site for tmpnam brought me to the C/C++ runtime library manual - it's been around at least since v5r3 - simple function - pass it some character variable and get a temporary filename = up to 32767 in any activation group according to the docs.

Ok, two people mentioned tmpnam(), and they're from different companies
therefore it's probably not some custom code internal to that shop. Based
on that:

1 - What is tmpnam()? Where is some documentation?

2 - What I am doing is generating a temporary file in the IFS and then
sending it off with SNDEMAIL. Would tmpnam() be applicable for that?
Keeping in mind that SNDEMAIL isn't necessarily "instantaneous".

Re: Using a UUID to name an IFS file

Hi Rob,

If you must use a UUID as an IFS filename, please convert it to hex or
base64. Don't try using the binary values as a filename, it'll come
back to bite you, no matter what you start the filename with!

Like Roger, I wonder why you don't just use tmpnam()? Is there some
reason UUID must be used?
