Mostly, I simply don't LIKE the limited display that results from using F1 on a prompted command. For example, CRTDUPOBJ requires eight screens just to get to the error messages, which fill all or part of three screens. For me that makes it inelegant, and for me therefore inefficient.

Then perhaps you'd prefer a more targeted display? For example:

 ===>  DSPHLPPNL HLPIDARY('CRTDUPOBJ/ERROR/MESSAGES'/QHLPSYS/QHLICMD)

...to display _only_ the messages section of the CRTDUPOBJ command help text (at least, on V5R1 thru V5R3; haven't tested others).

The DSPHLPPNL command has been on my site ( http://zap.to/tl400 ) for a number of years. Look in the Files section under 'User Interface Manager (UIM)' for it. I wouldn't mention it, but I'm surprised the subject got attention from multiple listers.

Overall, we need to keep in mind that we (most individuals and certainly as a group) can _program_ our systems. If we don't like it, we can customize.

Now, for IBM-supplied objects, _especially_ the various panel groups, it can take some poking around to figure out what the deal is. But that's kind of what we get paid for, no? (Note that IBM can and does change panel group internals at times and that there can be various standards, so what works for one *PNLGRP may need changes to make work for another.)
